Gunung Rinjani National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, TNGR) was established in 1997 and covers the summit, the caldera and the surrounding forests, around 41,000 hectares. [VERIFY: area] It forms most of the Biosphere Reserve's core area and is managed by the national park authority under the Ministry of Forestry.
The park protects the forests that supply much of Lombok's water, the habitat of its endemic species, and places that are sacred to the Sasak and Balinese Hindu communities. It also manages climbing on Rinjani, one of Indonesia's most popular treks.
