From Ridge to Reef

Managing the island as one system, from the forests of Rinjani to the coral reefs of its coast.

One island, one watershed

On an island as steep and small as Lombok, the mountain and the sea are close neighbours. Forest loss on the slopes means more sediment in the rivers; sediment and waste in the rivers smother reefs and seagrass at the coast. A ridge-to-reef approach plans forests, farms, towns and coasts together, so that one is not protected at the expense of another.

At the coast

The Gili Matra marine nature tourism park (Gili Meno, Gili Trawangan and Gili Air) protects reefs that draw visitors from around the world. Mangroves on the coasts of Lombok shelter fish nurseries and protect the shore. [SUPPLY: coastal and marine programmes]
