Communities and Culture
Sasak, Balinese, Sumbawan and other communities, and the traditions that tie them to the mountain.
Customary forests and water
In villages such as Bayan and Senaru, customary forests (hutan adat) around springs are protected by awig-awig, rules agreed by the community and enforced by customary leaders. Cutting trees there is forbidden, and the springs they protect still supply villages and rice fields.
A sacred mountain
For the Sasak, Rinjani is the seat of Dewi Anjani; for Balinese Hindus on Lombok it is a holy mountain to which offerings are made at Segara Anak in the Mulang Pekelem ceremony. In Sembalun, the Ngayu-ayu ceremony gives thanks for water and harvest.
