Climate and Disaster Resilience

Living with volcanoes, earthquakes and a changing climate.

Lombok faces volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, floods, drought and rising seas. In July and August 2018 a series of earthquakes killed more than 500 people and damaged hundreds of thousands of homes. [VERIFY: figures] Recovery showed both how exposed the island is and how strong its communities are.

What resilience means here

Healthy forests

Forests on steep slopes hold soil and water, reducing landslides, floods and drought.

Mangroves and reefs

Natural barriers that soften storms and waves on the coast.

Prepared communities

Education on volcanic and earthquake hazards, early warning and evacuation, with local knowledge at the centre.
